Cyber Bullying and Mobile Devices
Cyber bullying is the willful and repeated use electronic forms of contact, by an individual or group, to inflict harm on an individual who cannot easily defend him or herself. (Hinduja & Patchin, 2007)
Think About It
- What motivates an individual or group to cyber bully someone?
- How might people use “electronic forms of contact,” to cyber bully?
- How might these “electronic forms of contact” enable bullying behaviors to repeat over time?
- How might “electronic forms of contact” intensify the difference in power between those who bully and the target?
- How might bullying through a mobile phone differ from cyber bullying with a desktop computer?

- Persona is “the personality that a person projects in public.” (Merriam Webster, 2015).
- The psychologist C.G. Jung says that a persona reflects the role that an individual plays in life: “an individual’s social facade or front.” (Merriam Webster, 2015).
- Personally identifiable information, or PII, as “any data that could potentially identify a specific individual.”
Think About It
- How closely does your online persona resemble your offline identity?
- How does your online persona differ from the way that you present yourself in person?
- Who might view your online persona?
- Consider the social media that you use and the information that you share on these sites and apps. How might someone use this information that would cause you trouble or harm?
- How do you know when it’s safe to share your information, and to what degree?
